What does SuDS mean?
SuDS stands for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems. They are drainage systems that direct water away from conventional, non-permeable pipe and sewer drainage channels, in favour of more natural drainage courses where water is absorbed back into the ground.
Why is SuDS important?
Global warming is no secret. We are living in an age where more and more people are trying to “do their bit” for the environment – whether that’s cutting out plastic, planting wild flowers for bees, or looking at how they can reduce their impact on flash flooding caused by increased rainfall
Firstly, your existing surface needs to be flat, free of gaps and holes, as we will be applying your new resin bound layer over this. Resin follows the grooves of a surface, so the base is always patched up to ensure your resin bound driveway is smooth and flawless.
Your surface will be washed with a pressure jet to remove any dirt and loose stones. This will aid the resin to settle and attach to your old surface with ease.
Primer C (used on concrete) may be added. This liquid primer is like a strong glue that’ll give the surface a strong bond.
The stones used to make the resin are thrown into a mixer to clean and remove dust. This is then added to the resin and mixed until the resin is evenly distributed around the stones.
When laying the bound resin on your driveway, we will ensure that it has a depth of 15mm. So that it’s thick enough to withstand your cars getting on and off and daily useage.
When applying the mix, we use a towel to evenly distribute the new surface. Starting at one end, working our way to the other. It’s important the resin isn’t stepped on whilst applying to ensure we provide only the smoothest of surfaces. The resin is always packed tightly, to create a strong bond that’ll withstand the weight of cars and general use. Resin can be added quickly – in the summer it usually sets within 10 minutes; this time can be doubled in the winter. During application it is ideal that the weather is above 5 degrees and up to 25 degrees maximum. It is key for the surface to be dry as this could hinder the process. If light rain does occur, a plastic sheet will be placed over the top to shield moisture seeping into the mix.
Once your new resin driveway has set, it’s encouraged to leave it a good 24 hours before parking a car on the surface. It is OK to step on it after 4-5 hours, light weight won’t be an issue.
